It will work either way, but the most common flex line arrangement is to plumb the line from the oil pressure port (upper position near the rear of the block) to the outside center of the filter housing, and plumb the bottom of the filter housing to the forward port near the oil pan rail. There is a 1/16" hole about halfway up the center post of the filter housing that meters the oil flow through the filter. The conventional direction of flow is for the unfiltered oil to pass through the filter media from the outside, and return to the oil pan through the center tube and the bottom port of the housing.
