I did my choke cable by filing shallow notches (avoid sharp v's though - make them rounded) in the wire and then crimp the drilled out end of the rod into them. It works fine and no welding required which I could have done if I thought it was necessary. I think that is how they were originally done as there is no sign of weld or silver solder.
