In most cases it is better to mount the electric pump near the tank and it is also a good idea to use a fuel pressure regulator.
Both of these items can be obtained from most auto parts stores in both 6 and 12 volts. Electric pumps not unlike mechanical pumps sense pressure and will bypass. You can also use an electric pump to supplement a mechanical pump.
