Basically you are wiring from a gauge or device to the fuse panel, out the panel to what ever the pick up is.
I am afraid that is not correct. Everybody needs to read everything again. It does sound like he has hooked up a B/U light "correctly". It should be operated by position of the transmission mechanism/linkage..... but that's OK.
