Oldcarkook, I think you have the right idea, roll on some "decent" paint and leave it at that.
I just wanted to chime in here to pass along a little unneeded trivia
Back in 1990 when the "Clean air act" was signed (the start of the VOC rules) we thought for sure this was how we would be "painting" by now. It was projected that regular paint would be gone as the DoDo bird by 2000. But the paint manufactures stepped up and made quality low VOC products to do the job.
