I just finished removing the hollow threaded portion after a 2-day soak with PB Blaster and a Hanson #5 spiral extractor (Fixit1958). It required some effort, but it was successful.

Ed & Jerry, I didn't see your posts until after I just finished, those are good ideas as well.
