9 = assembly plant = Norwood, OH
HP = 1950 3100 truck
I = 9th month = September
15712-1000 = 16,712th 3100 truck out of that plant that year

HBM45758
Engine Serial Number for a 1950 truck
HBM = 1950 216 engine from Tonawanda, NY, installed in a 3100 truck
45748-1000 = 44,748th engine from that plant in that year

Looks like someone replaced the original 216 with another one. They went to the DMV and got the title corrected to reflect the replacement engine change. Then that second 216 was replaced with a more modern 235 with no contact with the DMV. So..

1. The ID tag doesn't match the title.

2. The title doesn't match the 235 that is in there now.

3. I need to throw away the ID tag and go to the DMV and ask them the procedure for replacing the engine on a '50 Chevy truck whose VIN # is identified by it's engine number..
