We set the toe on the race car with a couple of flat aluminum plates held against the tire sidewalls and two tape measures, one ahead of the tire and the other one behind. We had a couple of 1/8" wide slots cut into the plates to hold the tapes steady, and just compared the front and rear readings. Simple, easy, and accurate, and VERY inexpensive!
