Glass beading will reduce stress risers. Compresses the surface of the metal. The beads fracture before reaching the pressure that removes more than the rust on the surface.

Steve - I would recommend applying two coats of POR-15. It has excellent abrasion resistance and has a slick surface. Should work without having to lubricate the springs.
