Back fire is usually cause by slow ign. timing or sticking or bad valves. Check the plug wires & dist cap. Check the spark plugs for carbon buildup. If the mixture is a little rich with the gas we get now the plugs can quicly build up a layer of carbon. Make sure you don't have vacuum leaks at the intake manifold. A 235 manifold does not fit a 216 just right.
