If you expect the enamel to be resistant to anything like gasoline, road tar, or any sort of solvent then use the hardener. Acrylic enamel is kind of an epoxy and needs hardener for the molecules to cross link and properly set up. If you are having the hardener harden up on you you can buy it in small quantities at your local paint jobber.
