What's wrong? For starters using 1000g.
Since time is not a concern you could try using 320 on a DA to get the black off and expose the different layers you want..
Personally I'd start stripping with 80 or 100 and then when I have the 'basic look' (Appaloosa is what I get from your post) I'd move up through the grits as/where needed.
