I don't know what you have for a fuel filter, but it sounds like dirt in the carb. If you put a kit in it, check the throttle shaft for wear. If it moves more than .007 laterally, the shaft will need a bushing.
I'm not too fond of the rebuilds being sold nowadays, most have been done by the same people that do the starving artist paintings.
