Putting a 4 cyl. In will give you much experience with diesels, get the job finished, whereas a Duramax might become an insurmountable job. All 4 cyl diesels will tax the length of an AD engine compartment. GMC AD engine compartments are about 3" longer since they mount the radiaton on the FRONT of the core support, that is a place to start.

'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
