To build on Steve's post the filter element has built in seals top & bottom (similar to O rings) when it slides onto the center tube. The oil actually enters at the side fitting, passes through the filter to the inside then into the stand pipe and back to the engine. I just changed the oil & filter in my '38 or I'd be able to take a pic of a filter to illustrate it. I do have a scan of Fram installation instructions that shows the routing of the oil lines.
