The service papers from Carter are the best you are going to find. Most of the parts only fit one way so its not really that big of a deal.
One of the problem I had with mine was fuel seeping out the plugs with the paper or copper gaskets. I tried both and after talking with Jon at The Carburetor Shop, went with blue loc-tite to cure the seeping. They have been working great sense.
The other problem I had was setting the metering rod depth with out the proper tool. It wasn't really a problem as much as it was trial and error. I finally set up a dial indicator and kept changing the setting .030" at a time till I went from lean to rich. With out the dial indicator it was just a guess, and each .030" made quit a difference in how the engine responded. I was working on two at a time since I run dual carbs, so your single may not be as sensitive as mine is. The Carburetor Shop has the tool if you are interested in them or you may find one the web if you look long enough and have the part number. If you look the two pages above I linked from Old-carburetors.com, you can find the tool number listed. You may have to go to the HOME button if the carb you have is different then the one listed. They have a bunch of others on the site.
I used the Carter part numbers for gaskets and hard parts, then searched E-bay for piece parts as I needed them. I found NOS gasket sets for Hudsons and Pontiac's used most of the same gaskets as the Chevrolet did and the old kits were only a few dollars. I also found NOS idle jet tubes for a couple bucks each.
