Been driving my '46 1/2 ton for 30 years now and started to notice a bit of vibration in the driveline in 4th gear. Since I had recently done front and rear motor mounts and inspected the U-joint I began to suspect that something was grounding out to the frame. When I pulled the transmission mount loose I saw that the rubber on it had deteriorated almost completely and that I had possible metal-to-metal contact. I installed the trans mount myself in 1986 (a NOS part), but the truck came to me without one. Out of curiosity I drove the truck without the mount on it (doesn't appear to actually support the trans - more like a brace). MUCH smoother, so I'm thinking I'm right about the grounding issue.
Here's the question: do all of you have the trans mounts on your 41-46 Chevys? I'm going to install the rebuild kit, but I'm wondering if it's really necessary.
