The type with the little center wedge that turns 45° when
tripped is the best for straight slotted screws in the
smaller sizes, some have a pointed end that is supposed to
work on a Phillips but I've never had any luck with Phillips.
When yo get into a larger screw like the 1/4" stovebolts, that
hold the inspection covers or tappet cover on, the type with
the split tip are better suited, those come in several
different sizes.
Never hurts to have a few in the tool box or on the bench.
A real pain in the ars are the new universal slotted/cross
screws they're putting in most of the electrical boxes of
late. The only type of screw starter that will work with them
is the split blade type.
