Do you have the original metal panel trim pieces or aftermarket ones? I hope you have the former and not the latter. Aftermarket or reproduction trim are not made correctly. The gap for the cardboard is too tight and they do not have the proper contour at the upper corners. I had one piece that simply wasn't the right dimensions and did not fit the door at all. There is not much useful advice I can give if that is what you have. I started searching Ebay for original trim and they are hard to come by in good condition because the cardboard tends to absorb water and the trim rusts. You could try the parts wanted section on this forum.

I have found the reproduction cardboard panels fit my original trim well. Also, You should look at the shop manual and it should show foam spacers that are glued to the back of the cardboard. These keep the cardboard from interfering with the door handle relay.
