There were two styles of optional GM oil filters for the 265 (1955 version and 1956/57 version). Both look different from the filter in the first post.

1955 was a canister with hoses. It was mounted on the top right-front of the engine. This might have been a by-pass filter?

1956-57 was a spin-on metal canister that "spun onto" a head that was directly connected to the block (no hoses) - lower left year side of the engine. This might have been a full-flow system with a by-pass valve in the filter "head"/boss.

The 56/57 265/283 came standard with a block-off plate for the optional oil filter (RPO 237).
