Are the springs broken?
If not, a firm seat can be accomplished by reupholstering the seat and putting in at least one layer of firm material.
If any spring is broken, it should be replaced and reconnected to other springs (as originally done).
I think that Denny Graham has a photo-log/write-up on doing this (he will let us know, soon).
