converting to 12V doesn't require changing the starter .... ring gear teeth can get a bit gnarly with age, but if mismatched I don't think it'd crank .... if it still has a tag on it, black= 6V, red= 12V .... otherwise you need to count the teeth on the flywheel, altho I forget the numbers right off [someone will chime in]
