I'll go out on a limb and give you the answer that'll draw some criticism. What do you have to lose by trying to clean it up assembled. If you end up with shavings in the crankcase it could be the end but it sounds like any of your other options that's where you're starting anyway. I say give it a try. Flush it out good and see what you get.
