1 wire alternators are pretty commonly available at most FLAPS -NAPA at least- but there are other reasons a 3 wire might be preferable,
Mark at Mad Electrical covers it well, the only real advantage to the 1 wire is simplicity of wiring .... Mark also sells good simple wiring kits for 3 wire alternator conversions and is a good source of tech info about alternators
