Weatherstrip adhesive is a contact cement. so coat the channel and then the weather strip, and let them dry a bit before you press them together and they will stick, just like using rubber cement.
There seems to be more than one type of weatherstrip. The original kind was the soft sponge rubber, which seems to work ok. There is another kind that is molded but I don't have any experience with it.
