Your friend possibly had no muffler(s) at all, straight pipe. If you do an all day trip it's going to get old real quick in that little, hollow '36 cab. You can also bring along hearing protection.
I have 30" glasspacks and installed an 'x-pipe' before the mufflers, very mellow sound, then again I do a few 1k trips each year.
