thanks/ I ended up with an extra box a friend gave me in similar worn condition. took them apart, built up the worn teeth on the block that travels the worm with brass and re-assembled one working box. it is so much better to be able to drive it on the highway without having to herd it between the lines now.of course one thing leads to another. as I was working on it yesterday putting on an aftermarket cruise control I came up with- I noticed water on the floor and the radiator level down below the tubes. I don't know yet whether I have a serious leak that started as I was driving it on the highway Wednesday or if when I removed the coil bracket mount bolt from the head yesterday the hole could possibly be open to the water jacket on the 305 head. I hope that's all it is and not something like a bad freeze plug on the old V-6. I sure hope it's not that.probably be some plugs on the back side that would be tough to get to.anyway one more hurdle to jump.
