AK Steve, it's been my experience that the driven gear is more likely to be the culprit. They're usually made of plastic or phenolic and the cable end tends to wear the square hole enough to round it off. You could pull the cable out and inspect it, but I'll bet you find it's still square. When metal and plastic get together, metal always wins.
