Believe it or not, I grabbed a fork from the silverware drawer and used that to pull the needle. I had been trying to pull it with no luck when the fork trick occurred to me. Place the shaft between the center tines of the fork and gently force the handle down. The shape of the fork helps to prevent twisting of the speedo shaft. Mine popped right off with little effort.
