Truer words on timing were never posted, ojh
The original timing marks only get you close (you hope). Too many things have changed since that setting was marked (if you even have the original flywheel).
1. set timing statically to the timing mark
2. run and warm-up the engine and the set timing to maximum vacuum
3. do a "run and strain" and reset-timing by the
old-time ping test/technique
