I see now, I have checked three shop manuals and they all have the one speed motors with resistor networks for speed control. I liked the potentiometer I had because it was for a variable speed, but I think the multiple position switch type is more robust. I had replaced a fan motor in a window air conditioner that had multiple taps for the different speeds, but that doesn't seem to be an option for automotive.
