yes, the spring is right, and that's in neutral with the shift lever 'toward the floor' [2/3 leg] - if the shifter is moved to 2nd or 3rd, the pawl pushes/pulls the fork it's in, if the shifter is pulled toward you to find 1/R, the spring is compressed and the pawl moves to the 1/R fork, if the shifter were released the spring would push the pawl back .... as you assemble things, they all pretty much 'fall into place' because everything needs to be positioned so it connects, they "just reach"
start by mating everything loosely and then tightening each connector
