The truck is a 1962 GMC 3/4 ton with a 235 Chevy motor, SM-420 transmission, and a Dana 60 4.10 rear end.

In late 2019 My wife and I were helping a friend recycle and remove some vehicles from a property in exchange for an old R.V. In the sea of cars/trucks was this 62' GMC buried under a camper shell and a slew of Honda parts. I saw it there and just couldn't let it get chopped up by the saws-all along with all the other cars there. My beautiful wife bought it for me for $500, next came the challenge of getting it out and home. We came the next day to dig it up and upon arrival I noticed It was missing a rim now and the drivers side door was flapping in the wind and had had the stopper removed, now the drivers side door was sporting a pretty good crease and a couple cracks in the steel >.< . We searched the yard for rims that would fit and dug up a couple 15x12.5's I jacked the truck up and bolted those on. All the tires were flat other than the front drivers side, but that wasn't going to stop me seeing as my house was only about 0.5 mile away. We pulled all the junk off of it and started jacking up the camper shell, sadly to no avail, the jacks ripped right off of the shell when we tried. So I got my floor jack and picked up the passengers side of the truck. We then stacked anything we could find on the side until we got to the lip of the camper shell, then dropped the truck. Repeated on the drivers side. I finally was able to pop the hood and try to drive this out hopefully. I found a piece of scrap metal and dug out the rat poop until i could depress the petals, pressurized the brakes but the clutch was on the floor. I put it in first and went to find a battery, found one, hooked it up and grabbed a screw driver to crank it over (no keys). it cranked over and started spaying gas everywhere, I suppose once the fuel lines were pressurized they popped from the dry desert air over 20 years. after everything I went and got my braided steel tow cable and some chain, hooked up to my friends 40's F@#D and dragged it home.

After a few days I replaced the spark plug wires, plugs, points, fuel lines, key-set, and rebuilt the old Rochester B-type. Took off the valve cover and poured 2 bottles of Marvels Mystery Oil into a spray bottle and another into the oil of the truck. I sprayed the MMO over everything under the vale cover while starting and It fired right up, I continued to spray it over everything until my oil pressure got up. after that I changed the oil and It's been running like a sewing machine ever since.

Had to do ALOT of deep cleaning in the cab and had to rebuild the bench seat, It was only a frame with broken springs when I got it. I also got very lucky when buying tires I found the rim that went missing sitting at the shop apparently somebody sold it to them not long before i came and bought it for $20.

We plan on driving it as is until things break then upgrading along the way, It's due for some paint soon, maybe this summer it will get the primer but this truck is on a tight budget. We just couldn't let it be recycled and sold as scrap when it was a fairly complete truck with very minimal damage/rust. Living out in southern California (Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree) rust is almost never the problem your paint does get sunburned very fast though.

What a great find, glad you got her saved. What I see is a diamond in the rough. It's incredible the amount of personal satisfaction that one gets from just doing some of the little things on these old trucks.

Thanks for sharing your story and pics.

John

Almost have all the wiring hammered out now, just trying to rebuild my blinker mechanism, get some brake lights lighting up and the horn button needs some love.
