Just figured I'd share my '46 Chevy 2-ton project truck. I found it in a barn outside of Shelby, OH, along with a "modified" '46 2-ton Chevy school bus and the cab, partial front clip, partial engine, transmission and various other parts to a 3rd '46 2-ton! The completed trucks had been sitting since approx 1985. The license plates on the "parts truck" were dated 1969.
The owner of these gems is the oldest man (91) in the Shelby Settlement, an old farming community northwest of town and the 3rd cousin to a very good friend of mine that has taken over the farming operation. When I asked about the trucks, I was told, "They don't run. Haven't in years. Just in the way now. Probably haul them off for scrap when we get a chance!"
I asked id they could be bought and they all looked at me like I was nuts lol! The old gentleman decided if I could make use of them, he'd sell them to me for scrap price. After doing some quick "guesstimating", he asked if $350.00 was fair.
The 2-ton I'm focusing on has a 12'-3" platform bed with removable grain-body sides, a 216.5 out of a 1950, the stock 4-speed with the hand-brake, the "Super Deluxe" heater and 8.25 x 20 tires (rear) and 7.50 x 20's up front... all of which hold air! A 6-volt battery, coil, fuel pump and fresh gas was all it took to get her running!
The School bus was modified probably 40 years ago. The Superior bus body was cut off behind the driver's seat, walled off and a 20-some foot flat bed made. Made a heck of a farm truck in the day! It also has a 1946, (albeit non-stock) 2-speed rear axle.
I have no interest in the bus but a very good friend of mine, who just happens to be an excellent body man, wants it in a bad way. I gave him the bus and spare cab in exchange for free bodywork. He jumped on it! He's working on a 1935 Hudson Terraplane, which gives me time to get the bed pulled of and tinker with other stuff on the truck. The "spare" truck had some really good parts that I kept, including near-perfect headlight buckets, hood and grille... all of which will be going on my 2-ton.
This '46 has been a farm truck all it's life and it's going to remain a farm truck. The old man I bought the truck is a huge Massey Ferguson fan (he has several old MF tractors, including a fully restored MF35 with Multi Power!) My dad is also a MF fan, resulting in me growing up around MF tractors and combines all my life. I've decided the 2-ton will wear a MF paint scheme and will ultimately end up with the 6.254 PERKINS DIESEL from Dad's old MF 510 combine.
