Does anyone know what the original paint was behind the gas tank? Color? Sheen?
I am cleaning out surface rust etc and started wondering whether that rear area was the same color as the dash and seat frame? (OK I am new to all this, but loving it!)
Thanks in advance

Your response interesting (and, all of it is reasonable).
One of the trucks I am restoring is an excellent-condition original-interior 1954 1/2 ton pickup and I was surprised to find that only the front/visible surfaces of the fuel tank was painted (the tank and the paint are in excellent condition. The color of the visible surfaces of the tank is the interior color. The cab behind the tank is the interior color - I could see no overspray around the fuel tank in the cab.
It looks like the visible surfaces of the fuel tank were painted with the tank outside of the truck?
Also, in my 1954/55 Suburban, and pickup, and GMC COE, there is no indication of that black primer was used on the interior surfaces.
Regarding all of the above observation, other years might be different, of course.

I've seen TF gas tanks with no paint apparent on them, just the galvanized looking coating, and I've seen them with interior color on the face as you say, and one that had the turquoise body color on the filler neck, indicating the exterior painted after the interior was assembled
I've also seen trucks with an unpainted area where the tank would have been, sort of fogged at the edges as if they just skipped that part or there was a tank in front of it - can't say I've ever seen one painted behind the tank, but I might not have noticed
