My '52 gmc COE with a 302 GMC had a 12v conversion done to it sometime before I got it. I've been having problems with the starter and pulled it today. The drive gear on the starter looks like it was taking a major beating, some off the teeth were wore off to hooks, some were broke and flattened off. The starter has 9 teeth and a tag number of 1107626. That number comes back to a 55-56 Bel-Air with a 235.
Next I counted the teeth on the ring gear. It has 132 teeth and a casting number of 2135483. Now in my parts book a 2135482 comes back as a 270 GMC flywheel, there is no listing in my books for a 2135483 like my flywheel has. Assuming I didn't misread the casting, does anybody have a listing for the 2135483 part number?
More importantly does anybody know if these two will run together? As it is now the ring gear looks ok, but I don't want to replace the starter drive gear just to have it chew itself or the ring gear up. The way the drive gear looks, I'd say the two don't exactly match each other, but I don't know that for sure.
Can I take the new drive gear and run it by hand in the ring gear to see if the two mesh before the drive gear is put on the starter?

Ok, so today I did a little more checking. The part number on the flywheel is definitely 2135483. The fly wheel also has GMC cast into and D32. So at least I'm looking for a GMC starter.
On a hunch I measured the distance between the teeth on the starter drive gear and on the ring gear on the fly wheel. The drive gear measures 0.35" from tooth to tooth. The ring gear measure 0.32" tooth to tooth. I'm no machinest but I don't think gears will run with that much difference in just one tooth. The teeth on the drive gear are also "taller" than the ring gear, thus they don't fully mesh with each other. The teeth on the drive gear are wore so that they look like ocean waves, if you can picture that, instead of triangles.
So now I guess what I need is a lead on the 2135483 part number. Maybe then I can determine which starter I need to start looking for. That failing, anyone have any idea how to find a drive gear that will properly mesh with the ring gear? Thanks y'all.
