I think I need to rebuild the carb on my little Jimmy. It's the original 228 w/the zenith carb. When you hit the gas it falls flat on its nose, you really have to ease into giving it the pedal. I have a rebuild kit for it already (PO must've thought it needed rebuilding cause it was under the seat when I bought the truck). I've never rebuilt a carb before but I really would like to learn how.

This carb appears fairly simple- seems like a good place to start learning. Anybody know of a good set of instructions or YouTube type video that shows it? I don't see one for zenith specifically - will another brand give me a good enough idea of the basics?
Thanks for any advice- Greg

Carbs are fairly straight forward. If you have a camera phone I recommend pictures during the process. If ya get confused it enables you to look back in time at the carb throughout the process.

I can explain it to you, I can't understand it for you.

I watched his video. There are passages that should be cleaned. They are sealed with a lead BB that is drilled out and reinstalled after cleaning. Also, it looks like he fails to address the check valve on the accelerator pump. That is one of the first things to fail on a Zenith.

Thanks crenwelge. I see he mentions ultrasonic cleaning but doesn't show that step- do you think that would take care of the passage? Also, what is the common failure on the accel pump? Something in particular that I can look specifically for- I need to lay out my rebuild kit and see if there is something in it for that. Thanks again- Greg

There is a pressed in check valve that has a brass disc in it. Most kits don't include it and care must be taken in installing a new one. Here is a name of a guy that is very good on Zenith Carbs.
Larry Isgro Carburetors Inc

If you want it done right, I would give him a call. I have been fooling with Zeniths for over 50 years. I don't even want stinky carburetor cleaner around any more. But If I had a Zenith that needed repair, I would Larry do it.

The 228 is a 28 with the choke linkage 90deg off from the throttle linkage... so any Zenith 28 Series carb manual will cover the rebuild..

Here's a free factory manual..

Good scans.

Today I received a quote from Treadwell Carburetors for that "check disk" - $21.00 ea.!!! It's smaller than my pinky nail, and each Model 29 carb I work on has two, which are destroyed during removal. That we know of, they're only available still from Zenith. Sheesh!

Work to the wise: check the operation of the check valves, and if they pass, don't touch 'em!!!

Three places to get Zenith rebuilding kits that include check valves

carburetor-parts.com Mikes 43.95

carbkitsource.com 64.00

carbkits.com 74.00

Mikes has a how to video you can watch after you click on the rebuilding kit for the 28/228 kit.

I made a tool to install the valves out of a 1/4 inch socket the top one is easy but the bottom one is a little tricky.

Look for the G508 rebuild kit.. they are $30 on ebay and include all the parts. Since they are milsurp they include all the parts. I rebuilt mine and got the check disk out with a drywall screw.

You will need to log in to see pictures. Its not a true step by step, but I do talk about the check valve.

I have done a mess of those carbs and have the check discs if you need one. Shoot me a PM or call at 540-955-0479
Depending on which one you have you just lift the tabs and the disc will fall out. Some have to be drilled and pulled with a small slide hammer, those will need total replacement.
