So I'm trying to find out if the loose 4spd trans that came along with my truck is correct for the truck. The trans was passed along thru a few owners, until I ended up with it. Was a 4spd on the floor ever offered in the 3/4 ton? Since I've never driven my new project, I don't know how much I'll hate the 3spd, but hi/low and a granny gear does'nt sound like a cruiser for the streets. Is anyone familiar with the 4spds that fit the stock engine? Sorry I don't have any info off the 4spd case yet, I'll try and get that soon. Thanks.

The SM 420 4 speed was an option in the 3600 trucks and standard in all the 3800 and larger trucks.

Hy Marko2727, I believe the four speed transmission in 1947 was the old sliding gear transmission and not the SM420, the older transmission has a reverse lockout lever which runs up the side of the main shifter lever. The older transmission is not synchronized at all, and you must double-clutch to shift it. A picture of the transmission in question would be very helpful in identifying it, hope that helps.

A local farmer here in town has a '46 that has a 4 speed in it. He bought the truck new. He traded in his '41 because he could get a 4 speed in the '46. He said that the 3 speed was difficult to move wagons on the farm.
