Ok you electrical wizards. Here my situation,Have a 53 3100 with 6 volt system that I want to keep as close to origional as possible. I've put on a air conditioning compressor made by York that has a 12 volt clutch coil.I want to put on a 12 volt generator and 12 volt regulator to run the compressor coil 12 volt battery that also runs to my 6 volt starter. I need to know what resistor value I need to put on the regulator to run the rest of my 6 volt items on the truck and keep the 6 volt battery charged also. I dont think that the 6 volt load will exceed 20 amps I/E lights radio etc normal driving. Or I can rewind the 12 volt clutch coil with double size wire 1/2 windings to make clutch pull down coil to 6 volt. Does my conversion of rewind clutch coil work?

Beaver53,

You will do these things...12 volt generator, 12 volt regulator, keep the York 12 volt coil, and keep your 6 volt starter as it will function OK.

You need to do these things. Change the battery to 12 volts. Use a Runtz or whatever for your fuel gauge, radio and maybe heater fan. Change headlights and a few other bulbs and you're in business.

To me, this is the most sensible way to approach this dilemma. The half and half system is trouble waiting to happen.

If this is all for the compressor clutch, I sure hope it's worth it.

Beav, I agree with Atomarc. You are gonna have to either bite the bullet on this and go 12-V end to end, or move to somplace real COLD!

Or you can install another six volt battery in series and run the twelve volt stuff and the alternator/generator to the added battery positive post and the six volt stuff from the original battery. That will charge both batteries and will allow you a split system without any resistors. This was a common solution fifty years ago.
