Where is the matching frame VIN on a '64 c10. I asked about one that is for sale and all he could find was a 14 digit # on the frame under the drivers side door #24436308177776.

In the engine bay. Stamped on top of the frame rail, drivers side, just ahead of the engine mounts.

Thanks hotrod! The truck is a SWB but with a cab VIN showing it's a LWB so I'm trying to determine if the cab was swapped or the frame was shortened.

Only the last 7 characters if the VIN, will be stamped on the top flange of the driver-side frame rail, in two locations, of the '60-'66 Chevy trucks. Once forward of the front cross member & once under where your rump is located.

OK, I got the truck back to Iowa and I have found out that my '64 C10 shortbox has leaf springs! The original owner protection plan booklet shows it was sold by Johnson & Sons Chevrolet in Willow, CA., July 24, 1964 as a model 1534 with trans. no. 608, rear axle W?(can't read) 610 but engine no. is left blank. The ID plate and titles show this is a model 1534 long bed 1/2 tonner with an 8 cyl motor but it obviously was converted into a Chevy long bed cab on a GMC short bed chassis. I can find no number stamped on TOP of the frame in the engine bay but 2443630 8 17 77 76, spaced as shown, is stamped on the frame side below the driver side door. What exactly is this number?
Also, the instrument panel has lights for 'tandem axle' and 'overpeed' which are hooked up to the turn signal switch! Did all trucks use the same panel or is this one from a "big truck"?

That's the frame number, merely a sequencial number that was stamped on the frame. My truck has the partial serial number stamped on the frame under the hood, and the frame number under the cab, and there is no correlation between the two numbers.

I think that's kind of neat... but based on the gauge cluster that was in my '65 C10, it did not have the "tandem axle" or "overspeed".

Sounds like you have a "big bolt" cluster or cab. Does the cab have the marker lights up on the roof?

You might also have a K10 SWB frame that was converted to a 2wd?

I received replies from the GMC 60-66 guys that GMC did not stamp the VIN on the frame as Chevy did and I'm probably seeing a part#. Since I can find no other number, it verifies that my chassis is GMC. I must have a big truck gauge cluster as my VIN plate shows it as a 1/2 ton cab.

I will, but now I've got big problems-when I went out to look at frame #'s I saw that green slush has oozed out of a few spots on my 283! I looked through my shop manual but could find nothing on the number and location of freeze plugs, help!

Take a look at this article: http://www.thedirtforum.com/sbcrebuild.htm all the brass colored circular items you see on the outside of the block (sides, front and back) are freeze plugs.

Partial VIN on Chevy truck frames, in two spots.
No VIN on GMC truck frames.

Rear trailing arms/coils, standard equipment, on Chevy trucks...rear leafs, optional equipment.
Rear leaf springs, standard equipment, on GMC trucks...rear trailing arms/coils, optional equipment.

All dash clusters have red lenses with Tandem Lock & Over Speed screened into them with a position & cone, in the cluster. A piece of tape is applied over the back housing at these two positions on the light-duty trucks, to prevent light from bleeding through from the back & from the light sockets from being plugged into the wrong position. The medium-duty & heavy-duty trucks would have a dedicated plug incorporated into the dash harness, to occupy these positions. If your directionals light up these positions, the sockets are misplaced or the harness has been modified.

Rarely has a frame been shortened, withou leaving some tell-tale signs, like welds, plinth-plates, gussets or other visual indicators. Since the frame is void of partial VIN characters, it seems a donor cab was placed on a swb GMC frame with rear leaf springs.
