I picked up a 67 sm420 lid with the backup switch. Cannot wait to clean it and install it.

A few years ago, I installed a backup switch in my SM420. Coolest project I've done.

I cleaned the lid up today. Took a lot of elbow grease. I believe it will work. The shifter arm is bent different. Were they bent to lay down close to the seat in 1967?

I put the lid on. But now the transmission wants to pop out of 3rd gear. Are the lids and shifting forks different between the 54 and 67 lids?

Shift arm is bent different to accommodate a different seat. Look at the 3-4 shift fork it could be bent and not putting the gear all the way in to place. You can use the shift lever from the old cover in the new one I think. I think you can use the shift fork as well if the one you have is damaged. Call Novak for tech information if needed. But as I said I think the parts will interchange with out issues.

Thank you Steve. I had read that this could happen and be a problem. I noticed there is a section in the shop manual on this replacement work. Things happen.

I did not want to loose my backup light feature.

Hi Denny. Will do.

I spoke with the mechanic at the museum today. He mentioned the 3-4 gears fork may be bent and/or worn, or -something- about pins and bearings may be missing or worn somewhere. We will open it up next wednesday. I'll let you know.
