Ok guys, I have a stock 49' 3600 and I am thinking about disc brakes for the front...help..

lmc and or chevys of 40's have a complete conversion kit

I have a '51 axle under the front of my '38. I used '78/80 C10 calipers, and '78/80 K10 rotors.
I fabbed my brackets out of 1/2 in plate steel.
Replaced the M/C with a 1 inch bore with lines on the passenger side.

Nice truck Wayne! Do the K10 rotors fit the stock spindle? That to me is the kicker, fabricating the rest is shop time working it out. All of the disc brake conversion kits are 1/2 ton only and I'd rather not go swapping out axles for a 1/2 ton like some guys do. I already have a set of new 8 hole rims that the stock hubcap fits mounted and rolling. Plus that would put 6 hole on the front and 8 hole on the rear.....carry two spare tires? Nah.

The rotors fit onto the back of the stock hubs which fit the stock spindles. I did change to roller bearings.
Since you have 8 lug, you will need to find rotors with 8 holes.

Wayne's setup won't work for the 3600. There's a few of us out here that have been working on the problem.

The problem is that you can't find an 8 lug rotor that is shallow enough to let you use a bracket like Wayne's.

I've temped up a rear rotor and caliper from an 07 GM van on my 54. Haven't made it to the machine shop though.

Has anyone tried machining their hubs so they fit inside the rotor? Just askin!

Late model rotors will fit over the hub. Like I said earlier, they are all way too deep. The caliper then has to be mounted behind the spindle.

I think Grigg was working on something similar to yours, Wayne. I think he ran into a wall with the 8 lug trucks.

What depth are we looking for? Ive done some checking and most gm rotors are around 3.5" deep but mid 90's dodge ram 3/4 ton rotors are 2.5 " deep and lug pattern is the same. I havent look at my truck in detail yet to take measurements for a mock up.

I actually have some rotors that are 3.38" deep. It needs to be that deep for my caliper to clear the rim.

I haven't tried any other calipers or rotor. I may have to look into the Dodge rotor though.

I've been out in the gaarge, measuring and scratching the 'ol bald head. I've kind of gotten back on my disc brake project after a long leave of abscense.

Ford has a rotor that is 3.11" tall from a mid 90's F250. It's not a lot narrower, but it is at least going in the right direction. It looks like a 1/2" spacer between my hub and rotor would do wonders for getting everything lined up.

I've also came up with a new version of my bracket. It's not alot different, but it'll tie into the lower mounting holes, too.
