It has a perfectly good running Chev 235 engine in it and he wants to put an Automatic tranny behind the 6 cyl - 235. Which of the GM transmissions fit behind the 235? The 235 came out of a 1954 Chev car, but we dont want to use a 2 speed powerglide | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy kenparker, the only automatic other than the Powerglide that was engineered to bolt up to the six cylinder Chevy is the Hydramatic, that being said any of Chevies automatics can be installed behind the older Chevy six cylinder after you purchase an adapter. Personally I think the 200 4R would be a good choice, but you will get all kinds of suggestions on which transmission to use, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,384 | Hey KenParker,
You didn't say what kind of truck.
I'm doing the same thing with a 48 2 ton, but using the original low pressure 235. You are 1 step ahead.
I chose a 700 R4, strong tranny with over drive, mechanical control, no computer needed.
The problem is - if you choose a modern, drivable automatic, all of the adapter kits require a 12V starter. I liked Langdons best.
If the truck is going 12V no problem, if you want to stay 6V you are going to use something vintage. | | |
