#98733 01/19/2007 1:58 AM | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 65 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 65 | well, im thinking whatever this problem is, it may be something stupid as well. i did more testing this evening and am now discovering that if i jump the fld and bat terminals together, i also get the alternator to charge. at this point the gauge does the same thing it was the last time. at idle, it will show maybe 10 to 15 amps, and as i increase the throttle it will boost to maybe 25 or 30. the other nite, it wasnt showing the full 60 amps(even tho i said it was). am i putting this thing into full charge or not? what harm will i cause by adding a permanent jumper into this regulator? maybe adding a switch to cut and restart the power? what do you think | | |

I think it would be very unwise to try and bypass the regulator. It would probably end up incinerating your alternator, battery and maybe the truck.
The full field output test should only be done for a moment. If you do this test and watch the ammeter, remember that for the ammeter to read, it must be passing that current, and the receptacle for this 'hit' is the battery.
The proper regulator will regulate voltage and current gradually, and as needed. The battery won't take 60 amp blasts long before it goes into orbit.

#98737 01/30/2007 5:45 PM | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 65 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 65 | it works!!!! im still not sure what the guy did, but it works like a champ. it shows about 25amps at idle and when you rev it up, it shows about 35 or so, and the headlights and all the warning lights and sirens are working so much faster and are all brighter. good news, i dont have to charge my battery up all the time anymore. Thanks so much everyone for all your help. 76 dollars later im in business.
