I wanted to start this thread and share my progress.

I've belonged to an off road forum for quite some time now. Since I have a few friends on that forum I wanted to share my 51 chevy restoration with them as well, after all, we're all gear heads here. I started it in the off topic section of that forum. I keep it up to date with my progress and post lots of pics. Instead of making duplicate threads...I'm posting a link to that thread here.

Hope you all enjoy and follow along. Below is link:

Thanks. Yeah we've been putting just about all free time to that. 7 months and chassis completely done and all engine parts and components rebuilt and painted. All ready for engine to come in then we will be putting it back together.

All updates will be made to that thread...just in case anyone is following.

Stay tuned.

Oh...and don't hesitate to chime in and offer advice or ask questions or tell me what I'm doing wrong. I got a thick skin and can take it. Or I'll just tell ya to stuff it smile

I'm about to start tearing apart my trans, torque tube and rear this winter. No matter how many times I look at the diagrams I couldn't wrap my head around what all was in the job. I understood in principle but just couldn't envision how it went together. Your pics of the u-joint ball alone earned you a bookmark on my browser. cool

Thank you. That little sucker was a little more work than I thought. Main reason why...is that new cork seal made it tight to slide back on drive shaft. I recommend marking driveshaft where that threaded collar rests, cause with new cork seal...it's tough to move back and forth on shaft (even before it's threaded on the u-joint ball) and be sure not to slide it on too far. Then just slide on threaded collar by itself just past your mark. Then what I did is slide the u-joint ball onto driveshaft with the collar that bolts to rear of trans, slapped gaskets and some gasket goop on trans, then slide over the splines. Smeared some graphite grease on ball and attached the top two bolts to trans then got it in place over trans mount and attached the lower bolts. Don't forget the cork gasket that goes around the ball. Finally, I coaxed the threaded collar onto the back of the u-joint ball. Tighten down tight but leave yourself a half turn or more...in case it leaks down the road, then all you have to do is crank it down that half turn or so and that should stop the leak. Also, the gasket kit comes with 4 gaskets that can be used as shims for the rear of the trans. I used all 4. I test fit those gaskets and u-joint ball dry before installing. If you need help with that just ask. That can be for another post.

Hope that doesn't confuse ya cause it's a bit wordy. smile

Moving right along stove51. Its nice to work on parts as you take them off and have them ready to go back on. It keeps you motivated and grabbing things to go on that is finished puts a smile on your face a mile wide smile Way to go.

Thanks guys. We are having soooo much fun with this. However….I got a little anxious and installed a few engine components while my dad was at work. He wanted to be there. He said he's putting the plugs and wires on and I'm not allowed to even watch. smile HAHAA!! That's the kind of garage banter we have back and forth. Busting each other's *****. It's hilarious.

Until next time.

THANK YOU!!!!

Enjoy
