Have asked before about changing out the driveline in my Viking.
I'd like to still be able to use a dual PTO for hoist and winch. But like a diesel engine, maybe nice a Detroit.

Anyone who can recommend a suitable combo ?
I will keep the 2 speed rear.

The 261 and gearbox might end up in a rod later if I decide to swap.

Whatever diesel engine you swap into the truck will likely have or be best with a different transmission.
Only way to use your existing PTOs is use the same model transmission as you already have or find one that takes the same model PTOs, which may be few or none. Or possibly change some PTO gears such that they then are compatible with a different transmission... it could get confusing and expensive.

If you use a newer or different transmission as I expect you would with a diesel engine then you'll have to find suitable PTOs that then fit your new transmission.

You may want to read through my post on my dad's 470-37 diesel truck. There is starting to be some decent info from the other guys on the truck. The one piece of information that I found most interesting is that GMC actually used a modified frame for the 3-71 powered big bolt AD trucks. If you want to put a diesel in yours vs the 261 I may suggest using a 3-53, 6v-53 or something modern for that. I know those 53's are put in pickups every now and then. The only 71 series I know of going in a pickup was a 2-71 in a late 70's chevy.

Too many projects not enough time.
