HI List,

I need a regulator for my 55.1 half ton and although I find a lot of similar ones on ebay, the part number is a few digits off. As long as I get a 6 volt regulator are they all the same? For example if I find a 1118827 out of a 1 ton will it work?

Thanks,

Joe

while various regulators are rated for 6v (or 12V) they do vary in the amount of current they allow before cut-off. Basically they are matched to the generator. if you use a different regulator than intended, get one with a lower current limit than your generator can deliver, otherwise you risk overloading and burning out your generator.

Joe,
When choosing a regulator it needs to be matched up with the generator. In your case if your using the original generator, Delco #1102793 it was built for a potential output of 45 amps. give or take. Most of the time they would put out well over that if allowed. This generator would have been used on 1st production 55s.
The 1118843 is a 6 volt regulator and rated for a max. output setting at 41-47 amps. The 1118827 is a 6 volt regulator and has the same amperage output setting of 41-47 amps. Basically the same regulator. If you went with a regulator of a lower rating your generator would still charge just not what its capacity would be. 25 amp regulator will only let your gen. charge max. 25 amps. This is why its important to match up your generator and regulator.
Just FYI, the second production 55s using any of the several 12 volt generators available had a drastic reduction in amperage output compared to the 6 volt generator. Even the optional power steering generator #1102041 was only good for 30-35 amps.

Collector Auto Supply - phone # 800-414-4462
has Regulator # 1118843

Llewllyn Obsolete - phone # 818-363-5094
has Regulator # 1118827

Make sure they are Delco Remy NOS .

I'm sure you can also obtain aftermarket regulators

equivalent to your oem regulator.

Sorry, need to correct myself....53-1st production 55 was 1100018 and not 1102793. #1102793 was for larger trucks, 1 1/2 ton and up. Both still 45 amp and 6 volt but different generators. Either regulator would work for either application. The change in generators probably prompted the change in regulator numbers.

Parts Geek on the internet

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1955/chevrolet/truck/engine_electrical/voltage_regulator.html

shows a new regulator for GM Generator # 1100028
@ $55.35

I've never done business with Parts Geek.
So, I know nothing about them.
This took all of ( 60 ) seconds to find.

The point is that you can find a new regulator for
your particular generator easily.

What # generator do you have ?

George

those one size fits all (in any environment) tend to not work as well as the original manufacturer's part. I wanted to get a genuine Delco and there are a lot of them on ebay with a lot of different part numbers, Kennethw steered me in the right direction and I bought a NOS Delco unit on ebay that has a slightly less max current than the 111843 but should work just fine.

Joe

P.S. I cannot be sure which generator I have and it has no tag. I just know its six volt

Some more 1954 generator/regulator trivia:

A new low cut-in generator #1100028 (40 amp) replaced generator #1100018 (45 amp) in late 1954.

Thanks Lonnie,

Interesting stuff,

What is the significance of a low cut in vs normal?

Joe -

I'm talking outta my ear on this one, so take it with a grain of salt. Other 'Bolters with real experience can give you the correct info.

A low cut-in generator starts charging at a lower speed. More specifically, it starts producing a voltage equal to that of a fully charged battery. The armature is wound to produce current at low RPM's and a second winding to produce current at higher RPM's. The output amperage is lower in order to keep from having to increase the size of the armature and generator case by a large amount.

The voltage regulator is designed and adjusted to match the low cut-in generator.

I don't know if 1100018 and 1100028 are physically different on the outside. The '29-'57 MPC shows the overall length of both is 9-1/2 inches.

By the way, Ken Warner "Kennethw" at ClassicGenerator built the generator that is on my truck. He wound it for 12v and matched a regulator to it. They work great and look new. The 12v regulator does not have the screws through the top of the cover. I replaced the blank VR cover with a Delco-Remy cover that I bought on Stovebolt.
