I've been using online forums (automotive-related) for 20 years, so this is nothing new to me, I'm just new to this forum. The reason I registered is because I'm contemplating purchasing a '51 Chevrolet 6100 and this looks like a good place to network for knowledge and other helpful info. I don't have the truck yet and I'm still on the fence about buying it. It's actually a 65XX model with a 179" wb. It has a 235 with a 4-speed and a 2-speed eaton axle. Very little rust and it appears to be mostly unmolested. It has an old flat stake pocket bed on it that I am probably going to remove immediately. What I'd really like to do is cut it down to a much shorter wheelbase - like a single axle tractor. It would probably be very handy in that form with that 2-speed rearend.

This is THE place to be if you own old Chevy's are GMC trucks. I think you will find, or some of the great bolters here will help you find about anything you need. There is a forum here just for Big Bolts and those guys are sharp. Take plenty of pics as you go along...or I had to. My memory fades after the first day!!
Good luck. See ya around the garage..... oh, and your in good company. Lots of Texan's around here so your now part of the Texas Connection. Drop by the Texas forum and introduce yourself. I'll bet some bolters are close by. | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 | Good deal - I look forward to participating.

That's a true statement, can't beat this site. Leo | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 | Welp, I pulled the trigger and bought this truck. It was parked amongst a whole field full of crusher fodder. I happened to be over there yesterday when the crusher showed up and started setting up his equipment. I just couldn't bear the thought of this truck getting crushed so I bought it. I went back over there today and did some prep work - going to bring it home tomorrow. I'll be flat-towing it 60 miles. I'm not really looking forward to the trip but I'll be glad when its over with. I still have to swap some wheels and tires around - I got 7 extra wheels with pumped up tires on them along with it. I may also get an extra engine and transmission out of another truck that's there. Wish I coulda saved it too but I can't save'em all.

Another saved from the tin monster. It may be a pain but its something fun to work on and eventually drive. Now, post us up a picture when you can.... and be careful taking it home. | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 | Here's a few pictures of it that were taken about a month ago when it was hauled to the junkyard where I got it from...

It needs another hood and will need some repairs to the floor pans and some minor cab corner work, but its in pretty good shape otherwise. The engine is stuck and so is the gear shifter. Its been sitting for a very long time - 25+ years I figure. I'm hoping I can snag the engine out of the other truck tomorrow. It's about a '56 model I think, but its the same engine and it's in much better shape. Turns free and its not nasty inside.
