Where can I wire to power my neutral safety/back-up switch. Since they are used when lights are not turned on would it be to the same place as the brake switch and should wiring go to fuse box first?
Thanks in advance!

The back up lights should be wired to an accessory circuit. The neutral safty switch doesn't use power itself. It interupts the power of the starter solenoid circuit. The wire from your ignition switch "start" terminal should go to the neutral switch then another wire from there to the solenoid.

Thanks cletis, I'm still in wiring 101 despite having restored two old vehicles -- was able to figure out things by trial and error, taking them apart etc. -- did not do much wiring.
I know what accessories and circuits are but could you give me an example of connectiong to an accessory circuit and how do you connect wire to an old connector or rear light terminal I've tried splicing but I know that's not the correct way to do it.
Appreciate your help. Thanks!

RedTruck,

I think you posted earlier that you were using a mid sixties GM column ?. That is what I have on my truck. Neutral Safety switch is mounted on column. There are ( 4 ) connection prongs - 2 vertical and 2 side by side. Upper vertical goes to solenoid, lower vertical goes to ignition switch ( start ), horizontal closest to center goes to switched power ( ignition ), other goes to backup lights. Can fax you a sketch if you like.

britcon,
Thanks for the info. I think I got it. I'll try that wiring setup and see what happens.
I noticed that there is rectangular hole in steering housing close to the firewall but no holes to screw or bolt switch on to it -- I could use an expanding clamp but it might not be strong enough. Also the cheapo PRND21 dial does not match up with the gear lever stops--I have to go way past park for it to be in park. The tranny is not origional so maybe that's why it's not accurate. I have unending questions but dont want to overdo it. One thing at a time.

When I do the wiring as explained do I need to disconnect the origional wire to the solinoid?
The 24G wire from the ignition to the altenator is very brittle and is now disconnected. Does it have to be replaced with 24G?
Appreciate your help.
