Greetings all

Would the axle shafts from a 47-50 1/2 ton pickup work in a 51-54 pickup? I think I read somewhere that the differentials were different in some manner but I am seeking to make sure of that before I buy anything.

As you probably know, 1947-1950 are different from 1951-1957 (and, I'd guess through 1959). However, they are all the same length and have the same number of splines. Go back a page in the book and find a different length 47-50 1/2 ton rear axle?

Maybe someone knows the answer.

Are there stamped numbers on your axle?

When Chev went to Bendix brakes in 1951 they reduced the brake drum pilot size on the end of the axle.
1951-61 axles all interchange.

There are left and right axles, and they are different lengths.
Is that what you are asking Tim?

Maybe in my earlier post I should have said 1951-61 axles all interchange on there matching side.

How much did they reduce the pilot size for the brake drums?

I have an opportunity to acquire 2 NOS axles, R & L. If there not too large perhaps they could be machined down.

Do they actually locate the drum or do the studs?

Huck pilot diameter: 3.875"
Bendix 3.550"

I am sure the lugs would hold the drum close but they are held perfect by the center pilot.

Thats not that much. I think I will purchase the axles and have them machined down.
